How to choose a mattress (without lying on forty of them)

A mattress is the one piece of furniture you use for a third of your life, and most people buy it in twenty minutes based on how it feels for thirty seconds. This guide is what our Sleep Coaches tell shoppers at Snooze Mattress + Wellness in Brownsville before they lie down on anything: what actually matters, what is marketing, and how to narrow a showroom down to three beds.

Start with how you sleep, not with a brand

Your sleep position decides what the mattress has to do for you. A side sleeper drives the shoulder and hip into the surface and needs a top that gives way so the spine stays straight. A back sleeper needs the lower back held up rather than left to sag. A stomach sleeper needs a firmer surface so the hips do not sink below the chest. Combination sleepers need a surface that is easy to move on and never too soft or too firm.

Body weight and build matter just as much. The same mattress feels firmer to a lighter person and softer to a heavier one, which is why a review written by somebody else tells you very little.

Comfort and support are two different things

Comfort is the top of the mattress: the foams, fibres and quilting that your skin and joints feel first. Support is the system underneath: pocketed coils, high-density foam or a hybrid of both, which is what keeps your spine level all night. A bed can be plush on top and supportive underneath, and that combination is what most pressure maps call for. "Firm" and "soft" describe the comfort layer; they do not tell you whether the support is right for your weight.

Materials, in one paragraph each

Memory foam

Contours closely, isolates motion well, and relieves pressure at the hips and shoulders. The Snooze-O-Pedic line and Tempur-Pedic are the memory-foam options on our floor; see the memory foam page for how they differ.

Innerspring and pocketed coils

A responsive feel with more airflow. Individually wrapped coils, as in Beautyrest, respond to each part of the body separately and transfer less motion than a single wire grid.

Hybrid

Coils underneath, foam or latex on top: support with pressure relief and better airflow than foam alone. Sealy, Stearns & Foster, King Koil and Helix all offer hybrids in the store.

Cooling constructions

Copper-infused foams such as the Copper Collection by Spring Air draw heat away from the body and breathe better than plain foam, which is why they come up so often in Brownsville, where the bedroom rarely cools off on its own.

The Brownsville factor: heat

Our showroom sits in a city where summer nights stay warm for months, so how a mattress handles heat matters more here than in most of the country. If you wake up sweating, give weight to breathable hybrids, copper or gel-infused foams, cooling covers and a breathable mattress protector. The cooling mattresses page goes through the specific options on the floor.

Size: measure the room before the bed

A queen (60 by 80 inches) is the usual choice for one or two adults in a standard bedroom. A king (76 by 80) gives each of two people the width of a twin. A full (54 by 75) suits one adult or a teenager; a twin (38 by 75) is a child's bed or a guest room single. Leave walking room on at least two sides of the bed, and check the stairs and doorways if a king has to go upstairs. Split sizes on an adjustable base let two people set different positions.

Budget and the lines made for Snooze

The floor runs from Snooze-O-Pedic, Sealy, Beautyrest, SmartLife by King Koil, Helix and Brooklyn Bedding up to Stearns & Foster, Snooze Handcrafted by King Koil and Tempur-Pedic. Financing through Synchrony, Wells Fargo and Snap Finance spreads the cost into monthly payments, and promotional 0% offers run periodically; the financing page has the terms.

Then stop reading and get measured

Everything above narrows the field. The fitting finishes the job. Dream Mapping puts you on a sensor bed for about five minutes, reads where your body carries pressure, and rules out around 85% of the mattresses in the store. You try the few that are left, side by side, with a Sleep Coach who is not paid on commission. It is free.

We deliver and set up your new mattress, free on orders over $999, and haul away the old one. Snooze Mattress + Wellness is at 3831 Frontage Rd, Suite 2, Brownsville, TX 78520, open Mon–Sat 10 AM–7 PM and Sun 12–6 PM.

Mattress buying questions

Firmness depends on your sleep position and weight, not on preference alone. A pressure map shows it directly: a free Dream Mapping fitting in our Brownsville store takes about five minutes.

Neither is better for everyone. Memory foam contours and isolates motion; hybrids add coil support and airflow. Hot sleepers and heavier bodies often prefer a hybrid, pressure-sensitive side sleepers often prefer foam.

Breathable hybrids, copper or gel-infused foams such as the Copper Collection by Spring Air, and a breathable protector. Our cooling mattresses page lists the options on the floor.

Skip the guessing. Get mapped.
