King, California king and split king
A standard king is 76 inches wide by 80 long (about 193 by 203 cm). A California king trades four inches of width for four of length, 72 by 84, which suits very tall sleepers and long, narrow rooms. A split king is two twin XL mattresses (38 by 80 each) side by side on a split adjustable base, so each half can have its own feel and its own position.
Before you choose, measure the room and the route in. A king needs a bedroom of about 12 by 12 feet to leave walking space, and a one-piece king mattress has to turn the corners of your hallway and stairs; a split king goes in as two halves.
When two people need two different mattresses
The most common result of mapping a couple is two different maps. One partner shows pressure at the shoulder and hip and needs a softer top; the other sags through the lower back and needs firmer support. On a single king that is a compromise.
