Three things a mattress controls
Alignment
Lying down, your spine should hold roughly the same gentle curve it has when you stand. A bed that is too soft for your weight lets the hips sink and the lower back round; one that is too firm leaves a gap under the lumbar curve and props the shoulders up. Either way the muscles work all night to hold you straight.
Pressure
Where the body presses hardest into the surface, circulation and comfort suffer and you turn over to relieve it. Side sleepers feel it at the hip and shoulder; back sleepers at the tailbone and heels. Every turn is a small waking.
Support
Support is what is underneath the comfort layers: pocketed coils, high-density foam or both. It has to match your weight. The same mattress supports a lighter person and sags under a heavier one, which is why "firm is better for backs" is only half true.
Why we measure instead of asking
You cannot feel your own alignment while you are lying on a showroom bed, and a sore back makes every bed feel wrong for the first minute. The Dream Mapping bed reads what you cannot feel: it shows where you carry pressure and where the surface is not holding you up. From that map the system rules out around 85% of the mattresses on the floor, and a Sleep Coach shows you the ones that keep your spine level in the position you actually sleep in. The fitting is free and takes about five minutes.
Mattresses on our floor built around support and pressure relief
Beautyrest: individually wrapped pocketed coils that respond to each part of the body separately, designed to reduce tension at the shoulders, hips and lower back.
SmartLife by King Koil: engineered to keep the body aligned while relieving pressure, in a build that suits every sleep position.
Tempur-Pedic: TEMPUR material that cradles pressure points while keeping the spine in natural alignment all night.
Stearns & Foster: superior spinal support under layers of premium comfort, for those who want a plush top without giving up the support underneath.
Snooze-O-Pedic: pressure-relieving foam layers over an 800-series pocketed-coil core, consistent support across the whole surface.
Helix: engineered for pressure relief and spinal alignment by sleep style.
The adjustable base question
For a sore lower back, the base can matter as much as the mattress. Raising the knees slightly on an adjustable base takes tension off the lumbar curve; raising the head helps with reflux and snoring. The adjustable bases on our floor offer head and foot positioning, zero-gravity presets and massage settings, and they work with the memory-foam, hybrid and select innerspring mattresses we carry. Try the combination in the store before you decide.
Pillows, and what to bring
A pillow that holds the neck in line with the rest of the spine finishes the job the mattress starts; the store carries memory foam, cooling gel, natural latex and adjustable-fill pillows, and a Sleep Coach will fit one to your sleep position. Bring your own pillow if you want to test with it. Walk-ins are welcome, or book a time so the mapping station is ready.

Back pain and mattresses
Not automatically. The right support depends on your weight and sleep position; too firm leaves a gap under the lower back, too soft lets it sag. A pressure map shows which you need.
No. A mattress can keep your spine aligned and reduce pressure so mornings are better, but ongoing or worsening pain needs a doctor.
The one whose support matches your body: pocketed-coil hybrids, memory foam and premium innerspring beds all work for different people. The free Dream Mapping fitting shows which fits yours.
Many people find that raising the knees slightly takes tension off the lower back. The adjustable bases in our store let you try that with the mattress you are considering.
About five minutes on the sensor bed, then a short walk-through with a Sleep Coach. It is free, with no obligation to buy.
